Does the parathyroid gland raise or lower calcium

Parathyroid hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands can increase blood calcium levels.
The parathyroid glands are one of the endocrine glands in the body and their main function is to secrete parathyroid hormone. Parathyroid hormone is a peptide hormone secreted by the main cells of the parathyroid glands, and its main target organs are the kidneys, bones and intestines. Parathyroid hormone acts first in the kidneys, allowing calcium to be reabsorbed; it also absorbs calcium from the intestine and works with calcitonin to maintain normal calcium levels in the body.
When the parathyroid glands are hypoparathyroid or injured by thyroid surgery, parathyroid hormone secretion is insufficient, which can cause blood calcium to drop and blood phosphorus to rise, leading to hypocalcemic convulsions and even death.
And when parathyroid glands are hyperactive and parathyroid hormone secretion is excessive, it will cause bone calcium to enter the blood and enhance the reabsorption of calcium by the kidneys, while activating vitamin D3 to become active D3, promoting the absorption of calcium in the small intestine, making blood calcium too high, and inhibiting the reabsorption of phosphate by the kidneys and promoting the excretion of phosphorus in the urine, making blood phosphorus too low, thus leading to abnormal deposition of calcium salts in some tissues and pathological calcification of tissues.
Therefore, any abnormal blood calcium level should be promptly consulted to identify the cause and treat it symptomatically.
