Nasal polyps can be treated by medication as well as surgery.
First, drug treatment. Glucocorticoids, if there is no contraindication to the application, daily oral prednisone, and after a period of time, daily decreasing, the whole course of treatment does not exceed two weeks. This short-term assault therapy does not cause significant systemic side effects in the clinic, generally after the above methods of treatment, the polyp volume can be significantly reduced. In some cases, the nasal congestion is reduced after a few days of oral administration and the improvement of smell is obvious, which can be removed surgically or changed to intranasal local application. The advantage of intranasal local application of corticosteroids is that it can avoid the systemic side effects of corticosteroids and maintain the effective concentration of drugs in the local area. The main intranasal corticosteroids are fluticasone, cloth, etc. The characteristic of these corticosteroids is that they are not easily absorbed by the nasal mucosa into the blood and produce obvious side effects.
Second, surgical treatment. For patients who do not improve with drug treatment, it is recommended to receive transnasal endoscopic surgery. Surgery is a treatment for symptoms, not etiology, and long-term postoperative follow-up and comprehensive treatment are essential.
Patients with nasal polyps should pay attention to their diet, eat a light diet and avoid spicy and irritating foods. Next, avoid colds, increase or decrease clothes in time, pay attention to rest, reduce fatigue and maintain good mood. Pre-operative medication, stop using medication according to medical advice before surgery. For example, nasal drops and nasal sprays used for nasal ventilation should be stopped to avoid making the surgery more difficult and prolonging the postoperative recovery time. Avoid eating overheated food for one month after surgery, and pay attention to increase or decrease clothing to prevent colds. The timing of postoperative review of nasal polyps depends on the degree of recovery of the surgical wound and varies from person to person. Patients need to follow the doctor’s recommendation for regular review and make medication adjustment, intranasal cleaning or medication change according to the follow-up.
